Kenya Walking Safari: A Walk in the Wild Travel Package

This trip is for the intrepid explorer who wants to go far off the beaten path! Enjoy unique, multi-day walking safaris in the remote wilderness of Kenya, then cap it off with a luxury safari camp in the famed Maasai Mara.

We designed this Kenya Walking Safari: A Walk in the Wild Travel Package for 2 friends, both adventurous ladies in their 50s. They loved hiking and camping, and wanted an off-the-beaten-path adventure in Africa. We sent them on some of our favorite multi-day walking safaris for a truly unique safari. And of course, we added a few nights on safari in the Maasai Mara, as this is a must-do in Kenya!

They started with a night in Nairobi National Park, enjoying the luxurious amenities of a safari lodge. Then, their Kenya Walking Safari: A Walk in the Wild Travel Package began. They were driven to the eastern Laikipia region to begin a 3-night walking safari with a mobile camp transported by camels. They journeyed through rocky outcrops and lush green bush, in an area where lions, hyenas, wild dogs, leopards, and more are commonly seen. In the evenings, they slept in comfortable tents with cots overlooking some of Kenya’s most remote and beautiful wilderness.

Continuing their Kenya Walking Safari: A Walk in the Wild Travel Package, they flew to the remote Loita Hills region of the Great Rift Valley. This area is an Africa most travelers never see, straddled as it is between 2 iconic and more frequented destinations of the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. They spent 2 days and 2 nights on a walking safari with local Maasai guides, who introduced them to local cultural traditions as the small group trekked to remote regions overlooking the Great Rift Valley.

After their intrepid adventures, they enjoyed a more traditional safari experience in the world-famous Masai Mara, complete with luxurious creature comforts. They spent 2 full days on safari here, and even had a hot air balloon excursion one morning! They loved the classic safari routine, with the early morning wildlife action, afternoons dedicated to leisurely pursuits, and evenings spent sipping cocktails while watching the spectacular African sunset. They returned home with unforgettable memories of their adventure of a lifetime!

Day 2
It’s time to embark on an adventurous, 3-day walking safari through some of Kenya’s most beautiful landscapes! After an early breakfast and hotel check out, you will be driven to northwards to Eastern Laikipia, an area north of Mt. Kenya known for its wilderness and wildlife. A Karisia driver-guide will meet you in Nanyuki and drive you to the Karisia base to begin your journey. You will meet your team of guides and trusty camels, who will be transporting your camp each day. Once the camels have been loaded up, the adventure begins! Make your way through an area boasting the highest diversity of large mammals in Kenya. This region is also home to several endangered species, including the Grevy’s Zebra and African wild dog.

As the night approaches, your camp will be set up in a convenient location and though you may be camping in the heart of the bush, you will lack for nothing with piping hot showers available at the end of each day, sumptuous 3-course dinners, and a warm bed complete with hot water bottles.

Day 3 – 4
During the next 2 days, you will enjoy a morning walk and an evening walk. Rise early to take advantage of every opportunity to spot game, particularly large predators. Your journey covers a wide variety of scenery, ranging from a rocky outcrop to rich green bush, where it is not uncommon to come across lions, hyenas, wild dogs, and leopards. Along the way, learn about the bush with your guides pointing out plants and their various medical uses, the different animal tracks and droppings you come across, and the many species of birds you will see. Spend the afternoon relaxing, swimming, and fishing by the river before taking an evening walk to a sundowner spot with wonderful views of Mt. Kenya. Continue to camp, which will be awaiting your arrival each evening.

Day 5
Today, say a heartfelt goodbye to your Karisia walking safari guides, then enjoy a transfer to Nanyuki airstrip and catch a flight to the western edge of the Great Rift Valley, in the Loita hills. This area is an Africa most travelers never see, straddled as it is between 2 iconic and more frequented destinations of the Serengeti and Maasai Mara. Tomorrow, you will set off on another multi-day walking safari, but today, you will be greeted by the Maasai guides from Jan’s Camp and head to camp for lunch. There’s time to relax and explore the surrounding area if you wish. After dinner, you will be briefed on tomorrow’s trail.

Day 6
Embark on your next walking safari. This time around, the camp is transported by donkeys, and your guides are local Maasai from the Loita area. Travel on foot through this untamed wilderness to Oltyiani, the highest point in the Loita overlooking the Rift Valley. As the donkey caravan sets off into the forest to set up the next camp, your Maasai guides will be happy to share their customs and culture whilst teaching you the lore of the bush. They are reputed to be the most conservative of this tribe, dedicated to their traditions, ceremonies, and rites of passage.

In the morning, there is the opportunity to rise early and experience a game viewing adventure from an entirely different perspective! A hot air balloon safari across the Masai Mara (at additional cost) which takes off in the crisp morning air, and lasts for approximately an hour, allows for a beautifully peaceful experience floating silently high above plains, forests, and rivers.
