Namibia Highlights Vacation

Discover the scenic highlights of Namibia on this incredible vacation! Explore red sand dunes, purple mountains, and ancient rock carvings; track cheetahs on foot and see rare desert-adapted elephants; and see an aerial view of the desert on a scenic flight.

We created this Namibia Highlights Vacation for a couple from Vancouver who had previously booked their honeymoon to South Africa with us. They wanted to see it all, so we planned this highlights itinerary to show them all the best parts of Namibia.

They started their Namibia Highlights Vacation in Wolwedans Nature Reserve. This was the perfect start to their trip, as the incredible landscape was completely different from anything they’d seen before and they felt as if they’d been dropped off on another planet. They spent 2 nights in Wolwedans, then flew to Namib-Naukluft National Park (Sossusvlei and Deadvlei) to tour the iconic red sand dunes. They even had a private entrance to the park from their camp, Little Kulala.

Continuing their Namibia Highlights Vacation, they had a stunning scenic flight over to Swakopmund where they saw dunes rolling into the coast, shipwrecks, diamond beaches, and so much more. Their local guide met them in Swakopmund and drove them north to Damaraland, a fascinating region known for its unique geological formations and ancient rock carvings. They stayed at the luxurious Mowani Mountain Camp, which was a highlight of their trip. From here, they went on nature drives to take in the gorgeous desert scenery and were lucky enough to see desert-adapted elephants!

Next, they traveled down to Okonjima Nature Reserve and the AfriCat Foundation, a sanctuary for cheetahs and leopards. During their stay at Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp, they got to track cheetahs on foot and enjoyed fabulous views of the landscape from their room.

At last, their Namibia Highlights Vacation. Their local guide drove them back to Windhoek, where they spent their final evening in the serene and luxurious Olive Exclusive Boutique Hotel. The next day, it was time to say goodbye to Namibia and begin their journey home.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1
Welcome to Namibia! Arrive in Windhoek, where your local guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to Eros Airport. From here, you’ll fly to the Wolwedans Nature Reserve. This stunning reserve is characterized by red desert dotted with pale green scrub plants, surrounded by hazy purple mountains. Oryx grazing in front of the mountains make for gorgeous photographs. Take in the tranquil scenery from your cozy and comfortable tent or chat with your fellow travelers around the campfire.
Wolwedans Dune Camp

Day 2
Embark on a scenic game drive through your pristine natural surroundings. Your guide will reveal the secrets of small and large desert dwellers and their quest for survival in this harsh and unforgiving environment. Enjoy a picnic lunch midday and cap off your adventure with leisurely sundowners in a scenic setting.
Wolwedans Dune Camp

Day 3
Today, enjoy a short flight to the Namib-Naukluft National Park region, with breathtaking aerial views of the desert and sand dunes down below. Make your way to Little Kulala, a luxurious permanent tented lodge bordering the national park. In your fabulous thatch roof suite, enjoy air conditioning, an outdoor shower, and your own private verandah with a plunge pool. Time permitting, enjoy a game drive or a guided nature walk to see the amazing desert-adapted wildlife, finishing with a scenic sundowner. Adventurous travelers can opt to spend a night on the open-air star bed for dazzling views of the night sky.
Little Kulala

Day 4
Rise early today for a visit to the famous Namib-Naukluft National Park—home to the world’s highest sand dunes, which are highlighted beautifully by the early morning light. Escape the crowds using Little Kulala’s private park entrance. Climb the red-hued sand dunes and run down the other side to Deadvlei, a striking white clay pan where the remains of ancient trees stand in stark contrast to the surrounding dunes. Once you have explored Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, and surrounding dune fields to your heart’s content, you can enjoy a relaxed picnic brunch in the shade of a camelthorn tree. Return to the lodge in the afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Little Kulala

Day 5
Enjoy another scenic flight today over some of the world’s most remote and inaccessible areas. Watch in awe as sand dunes give way to the Atlantic coast, where you’ll get an aerial view of ancient shipwrecks, diamond beaches, and wildlife like whales, flamingos, and Cape fur seals. Arrive in the lovely coastal town of Swakopmund, where you can enjoy the cooler seaside air. Your local guide will meet you in town for dinner and drinks at a restaurant of your choice (already included in the trip cost).

Day 6
Today, your guide will take you on the road into Damaraland, a region characterized by rich displays of color, fascinating geological formations, bizarre-looking vegetation, and ancient history. Along the way, stop at Twyfelfontein to see the large collection of ancient rock carvings engraved in the red sandstone. Then, you will head toward tonight’s destination at Mowani Mountain Camp. Enjoy a picnic lunch en route and arrive at camp in the late afternoon or early evening. After a long but very rewarding day, relax in your luxurious suite and soak up otherworldly views of enormous ochre boulders fading into a purple-tinted horizon.
Mowani Mountain Camp

Day 7
After an early breakfast, you’ll be treated to an exciting 4×4 excursion along the ephemeral Aba Huab and Huab River valleys to explore this remarkable region and to search for game, including the elusive desert-adapted elephants. Damaraland is home to a variety of desert-adapted wildlife and hidden desert treasures. Return to camp for a delicious lunch, or opt for a picnic lunch in the shade of a large ana tree by the riverbed, ideally while watching a herd of elephants browsing nearby.

Day 8
After breakfast, your guide will collect you for a visit to the AfriCat Foundation. This sanctuary is a rehabilitation home for cheetahs and leopards, which you’ll be able to see on a game drive through the concession. Enjoy lunch, followed by an exciting guided afternoon excursion and a visit to the night hide after dinner. Overnight at Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp, where floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to soak up beautiful views of the bush and watch the adorable warthogs (or Pumbas, as they’re often called on safari) outside.
