Kenya Birthday Trip: Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari

The ultimate birthday trip and bucket list safari! Stay in Amboseli where the tusker elephants roam free with Kilimanjaro in the background, witness the largest blako rhino sanctuary, and discover some of Kenya’s hidden gems. Throughout your journey, enjoy luxury safari lodges that embody classic African safari.

We designed this Kenya Birthday Trip: Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari for a couple from Houston. They had previously done a safari in the Okavango Delta, and now wanted to explore a completely different side of Africa. We offered them Amboseli to see the tusker elephants, Ol Pejeta to see black rhino and ending with the Mara for an all around amazing safari experience.

We started their Kenya Birthday Trip: Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari in Amboseli. Amboseli National Park captivates with its iconic vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro rising across golden plains, often framed by majestic herds of elephants. The couple stayed at Kiturua Plains Lodge, where its Maasai-inspired design melds seamlessly with the landscape, offering sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro from a 128-acre private concession.

Next on their Kenya Birthday Trip: Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari in Amboseli, they flew north. Resting at the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountain Range, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It is also home to some of the last remaining northern white rhinos in the world. The Conservancy is a popular safari destination and is home to the renowned ‘Big Five’ as well as a wide selection of other African animals, including zebra, giraffe, hippo, cheetah, jackal, serval, hyena, vervet monkey, and many more.  The couple stayed at Tambarare Camp, nestled among fever trees in the shadow of Mount Kenya, this intimate camp boasts contemporary safari décor, private verandas overlooking the wilderness,

And of course, they had to visit the Masai Mara for their last stop on their Kenya Birthday Trip: Amboseli and Masai Mara Safari in Amboseli. The Masai Mara, together with Tanzania’s Serengeti, form Africa’s most famous wildlife park, the Masai Mara National Reserve. The image of acacia trees dotting endless grass plains epitomizes Africa for many. Then, add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture, and the conversation need go no further. The couple celebrated her birthday in style at the slick Olonana Lodge. The glass-sided suites offered panoramic views of the Mara River and its resident hippo pods. The couple did game drives, a cultural visit, and a hot-air balloon safari, all complemented by gourmet dining and spa treatments.

After their whirlwind adventure, it was time to say goodbye to Kenya. They flew back to Nairobi, then enjoyed a transfer to the airport to begin the journey home.

Day 6
You can’t leave Kenya without visiting the Masai Mara! Fly to the Mara today and enjoy a game drive to the intimate Olonanna Lodge. It is a hideaway of rare elegance and serenity, in a prime position on a private stretch of the Mara River – the very spot where Sanctuary began, a quarter of a century ago, in 1999. Olonana occupies a covetable position just north on the famous Mara Triangle, at the edge of the National Reserve – a marvellously secluded and leafy spot, between looming escarpment and fast-flowing river. Here the “Sanctuary” label seems especially apt. Yet all around, the ceaseless pageant of wildlife and wonder rolls on.

Days 7-8
Spend 2 days exploring this majestic park with its large diversity of beautiful scenery, including meandering rivers, towering escarpments, and rolling grasslands that provide the perfect habitat for the abundance of game, including the Big 5: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and black rhino. From the camp, game viewing starts. A pod of hippos lives permanently in the river just below camp, and many other species come to drink there. Sanctuary’s experienced guides take you to all the hidden spots, and our customised open safari vehicles offer all-round views, allowing for excellent photography opportunities. The Mara’s rich eco-system includes acacia-studded savannah, riparian forest, and woodland, which attract more than 300 bird species and a stunning variety of animal life all year round.
